
Getting Your Heat Right: A Guide to Sidel Matrix IR Lamps
Here is the problem with swapping out your original IR lamps for aftermarket ones: the temperature ramp-up usually shifts. If that heat curve isn’t exactly where it needs to be, your PET preforms won’t hit that sweet spot—the glass transition temperature—uniformly. The result? You end up with bottles that have weird wall thickness or that annoying pearlescent haze. Nobody wants to see that on the line.
Why the “1:1 Match” Actually Matters
When we build our replacement lamps, we don’t just make sure they fit in the slot. That’s the easy part. We focus on mirroring the exact electrical footprint of the Sidel Matrix originals. We’re talking about wattage and voltage. Why? Because the power density (W/cm²) has to be identical. If a lamp is too weak, the preform stays too cold. Too strong, and you get localized overheating. We spend a lot of time calibrating the filament length and diameter so the spectral output hits those short-wave IR requirements perfectly. It means you can just plug them in and keep your heating curve consistent without having to mess around with your oven controllers.
The Nitty-Gritty on Hardware
We use heavy-wall quartz glass. It has to be tough to handle the thermal shock of rapid cycling without cracking. We also use specific coatings to tune the emission. The goal is to push the energy right into the preform, not waste it heating up the oven walls. Then there are the connectors. These are where things usually go wrong. We use precision-molded ends to make sure the fit is tight. A loose connection creates resistance, which leads to arcing. And arcing is a fast track to burning out your lamp ends.
Plugging Them In (And One Big Warning)
These are drop-in replacements. No rewiring, no bending brackets, no headaches. But here is a tip: high-wattage short-wave lamps put out a lot of intense, localized heat. Even if the lamp is a perfect 1:1 match, it can’t do all the work alone. If your reflection plates are pitted or oxidized, your efficiency drops. A great lamp can’t fix a bad reflector. Do yourself a favor and check those plates before you wire up the new set. It’ll save you a lot of frustration.
