
Can a few new heaters actually speed up your old blow molding machines?
A lot of mid-sized shops are running blow molding machines that have seen better days. You know the feeling—the machine is old, it’s sluggish, and you just can’t seem to hit your target cycle times. It’s easy to assume the whole machine is just obsolete and needs to be scrapped. But honestly? The bottleneck is usually just the heating oven. You don’t always need a new frame. Sometimes, you just need better lamps. The secret is heat density. Think of it this way: PET blowing is all about how fast you can get that preform to its glass transition temperature. If your lamps are old or just underpowered, you’re forced to slow down the conveyor just to make sure the plastic is soft enough to blow. It’s a drag. But if you swap those out for high-wattage, short-wave infrared tubes, you get a much stronger heat flux. You can actually crank up the machine speed and still get the same “soak.” It’s a massive difference in throughput. Getting the specs right Here is the tricky part. You can’t just throw any tube in there. It has to fit. If you’re using R7s or Sk15 sockets, you want a drop-in replacement. Nobody wants to spend their weekend rewiring an entire oven because the fit was off by a fraction of an inch. We use quartz glass with specific coatings to shift the emission spectrum. Why? Because you want the heat to sink deep into the PET wall. You aren’t looking to scorch the surface; you want the core of the plastic to be ready. But a word of caution:watch your power draw. If you jump from a 1500W tube to a 2500W one, your wiring has to be able to handle that extra current. If your electrical panel is already pushed to the limit, you’re just going to trip breakers all day. Check your capacity first. What happens in the real world? Once you get these installed, the preforms spend less time in the oven. That means your cycle time per bottle drops. It’s a pretty simple mechanical swap, and the results are immediate. Just keep in mind that more heat in the oven means a hotter shop. You might notice the room warming up, and your control electronics might feel the heat too. You’ll probably want to tweak your cooling fans to keep everything running smooth.
